Representing JL King & Co on the Podcast: Michael Robertson on Leadership, Legacy and Growth

We recently had the pleasure of joining the conversation on Episode 31 of the podcast, where our Director Michael Robertson shared the JL King & Co story - past, present, and future.

Born and raised in Bendigo, Michael’s journey with JL King & Co began in February 1997. With a background in commercial building, he brought a practical, future-focused mindset to the business, quickly becoming a driving force behind its growth and evolution. More than two decades on, Michael continues to play a pivotal role in shaping JL King & Co and our sister brand, Simply Tasty, while staying true to the values that have guided the business since 1913.

Carrying Forward a Bendigo Legacy

JL King & Co is a family-owned business with deep roots in Bendigo, and legacy is something we take seriously. During the episode, Michael spoke about the responsibility that comes with leading a business that has been part of the community for more than a century — and the importance of honouring that history while continuing to grow.

Under Michael’s leadership, JL King & Co has expanded from a small operation on Breen Street to a purpose-built facility on Brickworks Road, designed to support modern food manufacturing, food safety, and operational efficiency. This growth has allowed us to better serve our customers while creating long-term employment opportunities within the region.

Feeding Communities Across Australia

Today, JL King & Co proudly supplies fresh produce and ready-made meals to a diverse customer base across Australia - including supermarkets, cafes, restaurants, schools, hospitals, and homes. Quality has always been at the heart of what we do, and Michael shared how maintaining consistency, reliability, and strong supplier relationships has been key to our success.

Our team has grown alongside the business, and we now employ 155 passionate professionals who share a common goal: delivering food that people can trust. From fresh fruit and vegetables to thoughtfully prepared meals through Simply Tasty, everything we produce reflects our commitment to care, integrity, and service.

Business with Purpose

A key theme of the episode was social responsibility. Michael discussed how supporting local communities, working closely with Australian growers, and fostering an inclusive, respectful workplace are not add-ons for us - they’re fundamental to how we operate.

For business leaders and entrepreneurs, this episode offers valuable insights into building sustainable growth, nurturing strong partnerships, and creating a workplace culture that supports diversity, inclusion, and long-term success.
