Market Report May 6th 2020

Green Beans

Fresh market update: Wednesday 6th - Tuesday 12th of May 2020

Product Report

This week we will recap on a few products that are changing over in seasons or growing regions.

Capsicums

Red capsicums are a great value buy this week due to the crossover of crops from three different states. Victoria, South Australia and Queensland. This is causing a flush in the market.

Did you know?

Red Capsicums are simply green capsicums that have been left on the vine to continue ripening. They are also a fruit as they are produced from a flowering plant and contain seeds.

Local Grapes

We are starting to see the Local Australian Grape season come to an end on some popular varieties. Thompson Grapes still have approximately 4 weeks to run so fruit will still be available but prices will start to rise.

Hard Lines

Onions have generally come back in price from previous weeks as more stock is available now that the Tasmanian supply has hit the market.

All Washed and Brushed varieties of Potatoes have come back right across the board.

All varieties of Pumpkin have reduced in price due to more supply from the North-Western regions of Victoria, NSW and Queensland. As a result pricing of peeled pumpkin will also start to ease.

Tomatoes

Gourmet tomatoes across the board are seeing a price rise due to unfavourable growing conditions in the local regions as the cooler weather sets in. Fruit from Bundaberg has started but the volume is only small as they are only just starting.

What's New?

Red Kiwi

This year, apart from the Green and Gold varieties, Red Kiwis have hit our shores from New Zealand. Slightly smaller in size, the Red Kiwi has a berry-like flesh inside thanks to its anthocyanins that cause this red pigmentation in the fruit. It is incredibly sweet, not like an apple, but like eating a jam donut. They are sold per piece, costing $1.20 each and will only be around for a short season.

Red Love Apples

These Red Fleshed apples are rich in colour inside and out! Similar to the fresh tart flavours of Granny Smiths, Red Love are perfect for cheese boards, cooking pies and crumbles, juicing or purees.
