Market Report March 18th 2020

Corn in a field

Fresh market update: Wednesday 18th - Tuesday 24th of March 2020

Produce update

On top of the harsh weather conditions we have experienced over the past few months, we are now dealing with the follow on effects of the COVID-19 Coronavirus outbreak. This is leading to panic buying, a shortage of produce and unfortunately, prices increasing daily.

Main produce affected by the shortage will include:

  • Carrots
  • Onions
  • Bananas
  • Broccoli
  • Cauliflowers
  • Potatoes: includes washed and brushed

This week Corrigan Farms will have their first lot of Celeriac entering the market we expect it to be available for the next 10 months. Celeriac is great for roasting, stewed or in soups.

An excellent supply of loose corn is coming from Bowen and baby corn is currently available in punnets. Corn is a versatile vegetable and can be used in many different ways. When selecting corn peel back a small amount of the husk and silk to check for bright, plump kernels.

Are in very short supply due to heavy rain and strong winds we experienced six weeks ago which we are now starting to see the impact of. Prices are up dramatically and we expect this to continue into April.

Finished Product

We have come to an end of a few products in the market the last few weeks.

As mentioned previously mango season is now finished until the start of their season again in early October.

Apricots both from New Zealand and local suppliers have finished for another year.

Now that the cooler nights have arrived we will see the last of Salad Onions for their season.
