Market Report June 10th 2020

Fresh market update: Wednesday 10th - Tuesday 16th of June 2020

Product Report

This week we will recap on a few seasonal changes and give an update on our most popular produce.

We reported last week that we are currently experiencing a shortage on Strawberries that would continue into the Winter months. Prices will reflect the shortage, but quality and taste are exceptional.

Today we purchased our first trays of Extra-Large Strawberries from Queensland however we are still purchasing Small Local Strawberries this week as Queensland are only sending the Extra Large into the market as of now. Shelf life will not be as good so we recommend to only buy what you need as you need it.

Riviera Farms

With the effects of some very cold and inconsistent Victorian Weather over the past month, Baby Spinach is still very hard to source. Our major farm RIVIERA FARMS are out for 2 weeks putting pressure on volume in the market. Also hit hard has been their Baby Carrot line’s (Dutch Carrots), all colours will be out this week. However, we are able to substitute these with bunches of carrots with tops on to fill this shortage.

Bananas this week represent great value for this time of year. But you may notice the fruit will start to look a little duller in colour, this is just because of the cooler weather in the growing regions, this has no affect on the taste and we are still seeing great tasting fruit.

Winter Vegetables

Finally, some great news this week with Broccoli and Cauliflowers starting to ease in price as we are seeing more produce hit the market. This is mainly due to having a full moon last week which brings on the produce due to extra light during nighttime.

Weather Affected Produce

Affected Produce

You may have noticed over the past couple of weeks, there have been some products that we have not been able to get. This is mainly due to the colder than expected start to the Queensland growing season. Green Beans, Sweet Corn, Zucchini and Button Squash are the products most affected. Although we are expecting this to improve over the next couple of weeks.

This Week's Top Pick!

Sweet Potatoes

Sweet potatoes are a bit of an enigma in the vegetable world. Despite their name, they do not actually belong to the potato family. Potatoes are a starchy, tuberous crop with a swollen underground stem or shoot, sweet potatoes however are a sweet-tasting tuberous root vegetable. Their creamy texture, sweet-spicy flavour and all-round goodness makes them the perfect choice when it comes to supercharging your favourite meals.
