Market Report July 8th 2020

Orange

Fresh market update: Wednesday 8th - Tuesday 14th of July 2020

COVID-19 Update

Just an update with recent events these past few weeks, everything at JL King & Co is business as usual.

The border closures across the country is not affecting the Melbourne fruit and vegetable market or any produce that is coming from the states attached to these closures. We are also still able to deliver to our customers across the border in New South Wales.

Product Report

This week we will give you an overview of what is happening with different produce in the market place.

Avocado

Avocados are experiencing a tough time at the moment, and as a result are expected to be tight for some time. It has been just one of those seasons for growers where everything has gone wrong. But what fruit is coming through is good quality.

Avocado Seasons By State

Queensland season drawing to early end due to light yield.

North N.S.W season just started but yields are also low.
South Australia and Victoria season is yet to start.
Western Australia season suffered from storm damage (with large areas suffering massive product loss).

Citrus

Apart from the regular citrus fruits around at this time of year, Navel Oranges and Imperial Mandarines, there are a few new citrus fruits available in the market at the moment.

- Blood Oranges
- Cara Cara Orange
- Tangelo
- Honey-Murcott Mandarines and Afouour Mandarines

We are in the perfect time to be buying all different varieties of citrus.

Capsicums

Perfect growing conditions in Northern Queensland has seen bumper crops with all colours. Green, Yellow and especially the Red variety.

An interesting fact with capsicums is that there are both male and female varieties. With the female having 4 bumps, more seeds and a sweeter taste whereas the male only having 3 bumps at the bottom.

This week's top pick!

Heirloom Cherry Tomatoes

Heirloom cherry tomatoes are this week top pick. These multicoloured, sometimes oddly shaped tomatoes are grown from specially selected seeds. Heirloom cherry tomatoes usually have a vibrant colour and flavour that works well in salads, salsa, bruschetta and pastas.

Produce Origins

Product Origin

At JL King & Co. we endeavour to select and supply the best quality fruit and vegetable for our customers, regardless of produce origin within Australia. During change of season, we experience a change-over period where a lot of products typically sourced from one part of the country are now forced to be sourced from another part. Over the coming weeks we will work to highlight a number of these changes.

This week we look at Queensland. With the southern states in the middle of winter, Queensland becomes the state where most produce is grown this time of the year.
