Market Report February 26th 2020

Peach picking

Fresh market update: Wednesday 26th - Tuesday 3rd of March 2020

Produce update

Over the past few months, we have experienced irregular weather conditions that have not been seen in our growing regions in decades. Ranging from heat waves and fires to hail storm and flooding.

All this resulting in our produce getting affected in not only quality but pricing as well.

We strive to do our best to provide the best quality produce available, please be patient as we work through this difficult time.

Pomegranates

We are now finally seeing the Australian season starting after the gap from USA fruit finishing. As the Australian season has only just started picking, the price will remain high until we see more volume start entering the market in the coming weeks. The fruit we have seen so far has been excellent quality.

Figs

Over the past week we have seen large volumes of fresh Figs entering the market which is making prices very reasonable, currently available are trays and bulk boxes. Great news our local grower in Bendigo has also started picking.

Cherries

After nearly four months of being available on our shelves, Cherry season has now come to a close. USA fruit will be available to purchase in approximately four weeks’ time but will be expensive especially early due to freight costs.

Potatoes

At J L King & Co. We have now made the move to a new South Australian Potato Farm due to better quality and more constant supply. We will now be using Virginia Farms out of South Australia for our bulk Potato supply.
Supply expected to remain light due to weather conditions experienced of late.

Pears

New Season Brown, Nashi and Corella pears are now available to purchase but stocks are limited at the moment, they will increase over the coming weeks as more growers send their fruit into the market. We will see pricing decrease as the stock volumes increase.

Leafy Products

Due to the humid weather we have been experiencing of late, leafy products are turning 'slimy' as they are sweating in packaging. We recommend only to purchase your required amount daily.
Lines affected include Salad Mix, Spinach, Rocket and a lot of herbs.

Bananas

We have seen large rainfall in North Queensland which in causing problems to be able to harvest the fruit, this is making them very hard to purchase in the market.

Strawberries

The recent rain / hail is causing our beloved strawberries to breakdown down in quality earlier then we would expect, please order daily.
