Fresh market update: Wednesday 18th December - Tuesday 24th December 2019

Christmas is coming!

With the holiday season just around the corner and the weather warming, its time to start enjoying all the beautiful fruit this time of the year brings.

Strawberries

Strawberries are slowly bouncing back after a few weeks of heat, hail and even snow in the growing areas. Due to these weather conditions crops are now presenting signs of damage.
Small Strawberries have been difficult to source due to the inconsistent weather.

Figs

Queensland figs are still available, but are expensive. This week we seen the first crops from New South Wales farms enter the market. Local figs from Shepparton are expected to start next week, however with the hot weather expected this week it may be delayed.

Green Beans

Green beans are currently very limited due to the growing gap between the Bowen and Gympie season, our Local season is having a slow start. We are expecting this to continue for another couple of weeks. With the quality of the machine picked beans very average, we have made the decision to change all our beans to handpicked at this time as prices are at an extreme high and feel they are better quality and value. Butter beans also are very scares, we should start to see them coming back into the market in about two weeks time.

Finished Up

It’s that time of the year where we see a number of our favourite produce finishing up for the season.
- Harcourt Pink Lady Apples
- Golden Delicious Apples
- Brown Pears
- Nashi Pears
- Corella Pears
- Celeriac
- Quinces

Extreme Heat

With the forecast this week of higher than normal temperatures we are bracing ourselves for some produce to be affected. In South Australia we will see Cucumbers, red and green Capsicums and field Tomatoes get hit hard. Locally, Cauliflowers, Cabbages, Lettuce, herbs and all Salad Mixes will suffer from this heat. We will endeavour to keep everyone informed in the coming weeks.
