Market Report April 1st 2020

Pink lady apple picking2

Fresh market update: Wednesday 1st - Tuesday 7th of April 2020

COVID-19 Update

As outlined in the details of the latest statement from our Victorian government, we at JL King & Co. want to remind all our valued customers that we are a Food Supplier, therefore we are considered as an essential service which will allow us to remain open to support all our customers in these difficult times.

Changes at JL King & Co.

Just an update to all our customers that are supporting us through this COVID -19 pandemic. As each day goes by, we are having to adapt our business to changes. Last week we had to suspend all our local deliveries on a Saturday for the foreseeable future. This week we have been reviewing all country runs and have made changes where necessary and have informed our customers in advance.

Locally we now have fewer drivers doing our deliveries as most of our cafés and restaurants have been forced to shut their doors due to the government restrictions and lock downs, so you will be seeing different faces doing your deliveries from time to time.

But be assured we are here to supply the same friendly and professional service as always and supply the best and freshest fruit and vegetables in central Victoria. All management and staff at JL King & Co. would like to thank each one of you and your businesses for your support during this tough time.

PRODUCT REPORT

This week in the market

Over the past few weeks, we have seen people panic buying at all the major supermarkets, putting pressure on all growers to be able to keep up with demand.

Great news this week as we have started to see the demand ease and more stock arriving into the market at prices that are more realistic than the last few weeks. Major lines predicted to drop in price include carrots, onions, potatoes, bananas, beans, corn and mushrooms.

Imperial Mandarines

On Monday the first pallets of imperial mandarines arrived in the market coming out of Queensland. As with every first pick, the taste was a little sour and prices are extremely high, so we recommend waiting a few weeks for this to improve. We will keep you updated over the next few weeks.

Apples

Our local apple supplier Mark Wood from Harcourt is supplying us his first pick of new season pink lady’s this week. Coming in a range of varieties including loose, boxed and 2kg bags. Now is the perfect time for apple eaters as all varieties are now freshly picked and packed and not kept in cool storage like later in the season

Stonefruit

Last week we mentioned that the local stone fruit season is coming to an end. We no longer can get any quality White or Yellow Nectarines and Yellow Peaches.

This only leaves White Peaches in 5 kg trays and Clingstone Peaches available to purchase in box lots only. Next up is fruit from the USA sometime around late July/ Early August.
